I began training docents by presenting a class for the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s docent training program back in the 1980s. In 1999 I partnered with Rolf Achilles to develop a bus-guide docent training class for the I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor, training more than two dozen volunteers. In 2009 and 2010 I again worked with Rolf and other associates to develop docent training programs for over a dozen Chicago neighborhoods as part of the Daniel Burnham Plan of Chicago Centennial.

In 2015 I provided training for the Landmarks Commissioner in San Francisco on design review and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.  For almost thirty years I have led trainings – both live and remote – of Section 106 Review for the U.S. Department of Housing and Development, municipal and state officials, various universities and extension programs.

In March, 2024 I led a panel discussion during Advocacy Week in on how to successfully lobby on Capitol Hill.  I helped train the student interns surveying pioneer houses for the Castro Colonies Heritage Association in the summer of 2024.  These early Alsatian houses date to the 1840s and helped define the architectural and cultural heritage of South Texas.
